Complete road closure for Muizenberg Main Road is on the cards

Muizenberg Main RoadA complete road closure for Main Road in Muizenberg is on the cards.

This was revealed by Andrew Rush of Kayad Knight Piesold Consulting, the engineer and project management team for the third phase of the Main Road rehabilitation programme.
The aim of the project is to replace the 500mm diameter water main, currently the only source of water to the Far South, with a 700mm ductile iron pipe.

Speaking at the second community liaison meeting for Phase 3, Rush said the closure will take place just after the School Road intersection on Main Road. He explained due to the location of the columns of buildings on either side of the road there was insufficient space for the equipment. He says with the close proximity to sewerage pipes, stormwater drains and cables, engineers had very little space to insert the new 700mm water main.

“In addition, we cannot remove the old 500mm water main without having the new one in place,” he says.

Workers will be digging a two-metre deep trench to install the new services and this, Rush says, will make the road unstable. He said it is too dangerous to have the road open to one-way traffic and there is no other solution but to close the road.

The road will need to be closed for 10 days and this is expected to take place in the next 30 days.

Tony Trimmel, chairperson of the Kalk Bay / St James Residents’ and Ratepayers’ Association (KBSJRRA), said the closure will have a “big impact” on the Far South and residents in Fish Hoek, Simon’s Town and Glencairn needed to be aware.

“This is why there should be representatives from all communities at this meeting. This road closure will have a big impact,” he said.

During this time, Boyes Drive will be the alternate route.

South Peninsula Subcouncil chairperson Felicity Purchase said if it was the only solution, the road should be closed but pedestrian access should not be restricted.

Phase 3 has also seen the upgrading of pedestrian infrastructure along Atlantic Road. A temporary stop-go is in place.
